The atelier

How a body is born.

The Borgo Orefici lies in the center of Naples, behind the port. Every body of the House is born there, on a single bench. The atelier on Via Tasso, with its window on the Gulf, is where the House receives, by appointment.

  1. The hands

The bench is wood, and the wood is marked: saw cuts, burns, a hollow worn by the wrist of whoever has leaned there for years. On that bench every body is finished by hand, one face and then the other. The thumb checks what the eye cannot see.

  2. The fire

The heat reaches the face before the flame does, as when an oven door opens. In the crucible the metal loses its edges and becomes a trembling drop, and the caster knows by its color alone when it is ready. Then the crucible tips and the metal runs into the mold that waits for it.

  3. The hallmark

One clean strike of a hammer on a small engraved punch, and the fineness is left in the metal: 750 for gold, 925 for silver. From then on the body itself says what it is made of.

The wait

The wait is the proof. Before it, the body does not exist.
